ABC45 WXLV, the Greensboro ABC affiliate, reported on April 23, 2026 that Grady Bendel, a 45-year-old U.S. Army veteran, had received a complete roof replacement at no cost through a partnership with Skyline Exterior Group of Pittsboro. The station framed it as part of an effort to remove the financial burden of home repairs from struggling veterans across the state.
What the station reported
ABC45 let Bendel speak for himself. He served more than four years in the Army as a specialist gathering intelligence from villages for military assessments.
Three months into his first deployment to Afghanistan, in June 2009, a collection mission ended in an IED strike that buried him under his vehicle. He survived, and lost his leg.
The station reported the roof as a full replacement, completed free of charge, matched to Bendel through a local North Carolina exterior company: Skyline.
Why it matters
Of all the coverage the first donated roof received, ABC45’s piece is the one about the recipient rather than the company. It is the reason the 100 Roof Promise exists: veterans who cannot physically or financially keep up with a roof, and who are unlikely to ask.
